Szeged hosts the most prestigious IT student competition at the end of August

Hungary hosts the most prestigious IT student competition, the 35th
International IT Student Olympiad. The prestigious event, which will
take place from 28 August to 4 September 2023, will attract around 1,000 participants from 90 countries around the world: 360 competitors, 180 team leaders and guests. The competition is organised by the Neumann Technology Platform, the University of Szeged and TechEd Hungary Zrt. with the support and professional guidance of the Ministry of Economic Development. The main patron of the event is Katalin Novák, President of the Republic of Hungary.

The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is an annual
international competition in informatics for secondary school students from the participating countries, organised since 1989, with a variety of cultural and leisure activities organised by the organising country. The IOI is one of the major international science Olympiads and one of the most prestigious IT competitions in the world. For the individual competition, 4 participants per country can qualify in qualifying competitions, except for the organising country, which can send 8 participants each year. Hungary has hosted the competition once before, in 1996 in Veszprém.

The venue for this year’s Student Olympiad is the Pick Arena in Szeged, where 360 competitors will compete over two days in tasks such as problem analysis, designing algorithms and data structures, and programming and testing.

Hungarian competitors have had great success at the Student Olympics over the past decades, winning 13 gold, 37 silver and 47 bronze medals. Among the gold medallists, Hungary was the absolute winner in 1992. In addition, all Hungarian athletes have won medals in eleven Olympics so far.
